Samantha Jade reveals the huge Hollywood role she lost to Kristen Stewart that almost ruined her acting career: ‘It was such a scar for me’

She’s the Australian pop star who shot to fame after winning The X Factor in 2012.

And now Samantha Jade, 37, has revealed that she once tried out for Hollywood – with disastrous results.

The blonde hitmaker said she abandoned all hope of a movie career after she went up for a role against 34-year-old Twilight star Kristen Stewart.

Appearing on the You Tube channel WirkingWith on Wednesday, the Perth-born performer said that after her ‘terrible’ audition she wanted to quit acting for good.

Based in Los Angeles at the time, Jade said she was persuaded to try out for the part of real-life rock star Joan Jett in the 2010 bio pic The Runaways – a role eventually played by Stewart.

‘So I went in and I said to them, ‘”Listen, guys, I know I’m supposed to be an actress but I’m not that kind of actress, I don’t think I can become a rock chick”’ Samantha said.

‘I went in, I did the audition, I knew I was terrible, I walked out and I thought that was the worst thing I’ve ever done.

‘I got a call from my agent, he’s like they just called and said you were the worst audition of the day. It was such a scar for me, so after that, every audition I went on I was so nervous, I was terrible.’

Elsewhere in the chat, Samantha said she would like to return to acting and revealed she had a far more successful audition for the reboot of 90210.

Samantha later won accolade and a Logie nomination for playing Kylie Minogue in the 2014 rock bio pic  INXS: Never Tear Us Apart.

However, she became a real screen fan favourite for her role in Home and Away playing the character of Isla in 2016.

She also featured in the acclaimed series Love Child.

It comes after Samantha finished as a runner-up in this year’s Dancing with the Stars after turning down an invitation to appear as a contestant several times.

The singer told Yahoo Lifestyle she knocked back the offers because she was ‘scared’.

‘I think they asked me last November and I was kind of like, “Oh, I’m not sure” again and then took ages to say yes,’ she admitted.

‘And my manager was like, “What is it? What are you scared of? What is the thing?”. I think I was like, “Oh no, I won’t be good at it, it’ll be too hard”.’

‘[I was] putting it in that basket of the ‘too hard’ thing. And then I was like, why am I doing that? Like, how fun to learn a new skill as well?’

Samantha said she finally agreed to do something outside of her comfort zone and joined the show.

Samantha shot to fame in 2012 when she won the fourth season of The X-Factor Australia, and became the first woman to win the series.

In October 2022, she married her long-time partner Pat Handlin in an intimate ceremony in Venice.
