Samsung’s voice assistant is released in Australia

Samsung has released its long awaited voice-activated assistant, Bixby, in Australia – but it’s not completely up to date with Aussie slang.

While the assistant likely can’t tell you where to get a sausage sanger, or where the nearest servo is, Bixby does understand context.

Immediately after taking a photo for instance, users can instruct Bixby to message the image to someone on their contact list.

While the voice assistant is advanced in that it recognises context, users may need to be patient when trying to use slang, like 'sausage sanger'

It’s similar to the recently released Google Home, which recalls a user’s last question or command and, if applicable, applies it to the most recent interaction.

But unlike Bixby, the virtual home-assistant – which can be linked up to devices throughout the home such as televisions and lights – does understand slang.

When questioned on where the nearest ‘servo’ is, Google Home will recite a list of nearby service stations.

The recently released Google Home was designed to understand slang, and will list nearby petrol stations when asked 'where's the nearest servo?'

Samsung says their new voice-assistant will soon learn the lingo though, as it has the ability to learn new commands, especially frequently used ones.

‘Natural language understanding allows Bixby to continuously improve its ability to interpret regional dialects,’ a statement read.

‘But, since Bixby learns more frequently used command terms more quickly, it will take more time for Bixby to fully understand regional dialects that are used less frequently.’

While current Samsung owners will be able to download Bixby as an app, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 will provide a side button to activate the assistant.
