Samuel Johnson shares shocking images taken after he was hit by a car

Samuel Johnson spent weeks in hospital after being hit by a car and suffering head injuries in June. 

The actor, 43, had detailed the horror aftermath of his accident in an interview with The Project on Monday. 

Sharing photos of the moments after he was struck down and attended to by ambulance crew, the star says he does not recall them being taken.

‘I pulled into a slip road and went and had a wee and woke up a couple of weeks later,’ he said. 

‘I wasn’t expected to survive. I nearly died. My face was really a mess, basically my whole right side was cactus. I inhaled glass’. 

He added that his family were told he may not make it due to the extent of his injuries.

‘I got hit between 40 and 50km/h by a small white vehicle. I broke my skull, I fractured my upper neck, and luckily my face bore the brunt of the impact, so my face saved my brain from a lot of the damage,’ he said. 

‘Basically I got hit fairly badly and by the time they got me to hospital, they rushed me into ICU, I tanked, and I had two loved ones with me, I was told later, that were put into the death room – the one with the fridge and the couch where you are private and you are able to be told the bad news.’ 

Sam credited his girlfriend, Emma Rooke, with being his saviour – ensuring help reached him as soon as possible.

When he woke up in hospital 10 days later, he had no memory of what happened, and in fact, began speaking in a Russian accent.   

‘It was weird waking up. I woke up and I was really way more famous than I ever remembered being,’ he said.

‘[I thought] photographers were trying to get at me while I was inside and I wasn’t in a hospital – I was either in a mental home or my drink had been spiked.

‘Maybe I was kidnapped, maybe I was clinically insane. So, I thought all kinds of things. I was Russian for a while, I spoke with a heavy Russian accent in three-word sentences for a couple of days, and then I was a Japanese 11-year-old girl. 

‘Basically happens when your brain gets wobbled is you go loopy,’ Sam added. 

The Dancing With The Stars winner says that while his visible wounds are healed, he is still in the process of recovering.

He also shared photos of his injuries and recovery, admitting he couldn’t remember them being taken, and could not look at them if he did.

‘I wish I didn’t have to tell you this. Early Saturday night Sam was on his way to visit family when he was accidentally hit by a car,’ she wrote.

‘Our Ambos got him picked up and tucked away safely in hospital in record time. I followed them in.

‘The fantastical medical staff are in overdrive taking care of his sore head,’ she added.

‘He’s awake and not too happy that he doesn’t have his pants – nobody loves a hospital gown. Hearing his voice is lovely, but can’t wait for hugs when it’s safe.’

Samuel started the Love My Sister cancer charity in 2012, with his late sister, Connie Johnson, who died of breast cancer at age 40 in 2017.

In 2018, Samuel  was awarded an Australian of the Year honour, for his work in entertainment and his charity undertakings. 

The Crackerjack star, who took a break from acting in recent years, won Dancing With The Stars in 2019. 

He also stripped naked on stage to raise funds for charity in The All New Monty special last year.

Samuel made his return to television this year, and has been starring in Eden, a scintillating new drama on Stan.  

The Angel Baby actor is best known for his starring role on the drama The Secret Life of Us which first premiered in July 2001 and ran until December 2005.

He has also found success as an author, releasing the books Dear Santa, Dear Mum and Dear Dad, as well as Heroes Next Door, penned with his sister Hilde.
