A savvy punter is looking at a $200,000 payday if virtually unknown South Korean tennis player Chung Hyeon goes on to create history and wins the Australian Open.

Before meeting Novak Djokovic on the court Chung was considered a rank outsider, before knocking out the Serbian former number one in straight sets.

But one backer saw the potential from afar, and just over a week ago placed a $800 bet at $251 with the potential to collect $200,800, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Chung has now shortened to a $15 chance to claim the men’s title, far less than the previously rewarding pay off he was sitting at.

His opponent Tennys Sandgren comes in at a $51 chance to win the men’s title with the TAB – a steep fall from the $1001 pre-tournament.

Just days ago, before his enthralling win over Dominic Thiem, one punter put a $50 wager paying $501 on Sandgren to take it out, with a collect of $25,050.

On Wednesday Sandgren and Chung will face off in the quarterfinals.
