Schoolgirl writes note to IKEA asking them to replace their ‘boring’ blue flag with her unicorn design – and the homewares giant AGREES

  • A seven-year-old has written a letter to IKEA asking the store to change its flags
  • She requested the homewares giant consider adding a unicorn to their design
  • In an unexpected turn of events, the store has responded and said they’ll do it
  • The young girl’s designs will feature on a flag to celebrate Unicorn Day, April 9

A seven-year-old who loves unicorns has revamped IKEA’s iconic yellow and blue striped flag after she wrote a letter to the Swedish homewares store.

The idea to change the flags struck Charlotte on her way to school, as each day she and her mum’s commute would take them past their local IKEA in Springvale, South East Melbourne.

To make her dream come true, Charlotte wrote a letter to IKEA’s bosses asking if they’d consider making some changes to their flags and consider her designs.

‘Dear IKEA boss, can you please change the boring old flags near the road in Springvale to these pictures,’ Charlotte began her note.

Her letter also included drawings she thought would look good on the company’s flags, showing unicorns saying the word ‘IKEA’.

In a surprising twist, Charlotte’s letter made it into the right hands and a response was issued to the young girl from Julian, IKEA’s Springvale manager.

‘We think you are right, they are a bit boring,’ Julian wrote.

‘We actually really love unicorns too, and we loved your idea so much we’ve decided to make a whole day out of it and celebrate Unicorn Day with the new flag.’

Charlotte’s mum Rachael told Daily Mail Australia the family were really proud of her for writing a letter to the ‘IKEA boss’ suggesting he change the flags to her favourite animal.

‘We are blown away by IKEA’s response. It’s going to be so exciting for Charlotte to see her design on a flag at our local IKEA in Springvale and for the whole family to be involved in the great activities the store is putting on.

‘I love that my daughter is seeing that she can influence the world around her.’

A new flag that incorporates Charlotte’s cute design will be flown from the store’s flagpoles for two weeks starting from April 9 – which is National Unicorn Day.

Charlotte’s inspirational idea has also caught the attention of Jan Gardberg, CEO at IKEA, who said he was impressed with the seven-year-old’s creativity:

‘We have been inspired that this little girl has shown her creativity in such a unique way, and we are excited to celebrate her drawings whilst making it a reality and bringing it to life,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

‘At IKEA we are always looking for new ways to work and unlock potential and this is a brilliant example of us working together with the community to do so.’
