Scott Morrison backs Brisbane’s 2032 Olympic bid and says it could outdo Sydney in 2000

Scott Morrison throws his weight behind Brisbane’s Olympic Games bid – and says it will be BETTER than Sydney 2000

  • Prime Minister Scott Morrison is backing Brisbane’s 2032 bid for the Olympics
  • He also said it had the potential to be even better than the Sydney 2000 games
  • The Commonwealth has pledged $10million to advance Queensland’s bid

The push for Brisbane to host the 2032 Olympics has received a boost with Scott Morrison throwing his ‘very clear’ support behind the bid.

The Prime Minister met with International Olympics Committee president Thomas Bach in Japan at the weekend, saying the government had committed to the Games financially.

Australian Olympic Committee boss John Coates said Mr Morrison had also described as Brisbane as having the potential to outdo Sydney’s 2000 Olympics, described at the time as the ‘best ever’.

‘The Prime Minister made it very clear that he was enthused by what he heard at the meeting and that the federal government was ready to move forward,’ Australian Olympic Committee boss John Coates said.

To prepare a southeast Queensland bid for 2032, the federal government has committed up to $10 million for a partnership between all levels of government.

The bid would be centred on Brisbane as the location for the world’s biggest sporting event.

Should Brisbane get the nod, it would be the third Australian city to host the Olympics after Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000, which former International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch described as the ‘best ever’.

Brisbane hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1982. The Gold Coast hosted this event last year.

The Queensland capital faces competition from North and South Korea, who have put in a joint bid.

Indonesia and Germany are among the nations that have also expressed interest.
