Shane Warne Memorial: Brooke Warne breaks down in emotional tribute to late cricket icon

Shane Warne’s oldest daughter has broken down as she shared with the world what she misses most about the late cricket legend in a gut-wrenching tribute.

Brooke, Jackson and Summer Warne gave heartbreaking speeches at their father’s memorial at the Melbourne Cricket Ground watched by billions worldwide.

The spin bowler’s eldest daughter Brooke, 24, opened up about the anguish that her dad will never see her or her siblings achieve major life milestones such as marriage and kids.

Nor will he see her get the work promotion she was working towards or share with the family the exciting things he planned and had coming up in his life.

‘I could go on forever about what we’re going to miss out on, but nothing would be more upsetting about how much I already miss you Dad,’ Brooke said.

‘I feel like you’re on holiday, because you were always working out of Australia, but I know that’s not the case.

‘But what makes me the saddest is, I will never get to wrap my arms around you and give you the biggest hug and rest my chin on your chest.

She described her father as their shining star in life who will continue shining down on them.

‘We will do you so proud, Dad and we are so proud of everything you have achieved,’ Brooke vowed.

‘We’re going to do what you always told us – try our best and we will try our best to live in a world without you.’

She struggled to maintain her composure as she  reminisced about their uncanny similarities and common love for food.

‘I will miss grabbing your big wrists and feeling your hands and saying that I have big fat fingers just like you,’ Brooke recalled.

‘I will miss our chats just about how big our double chins are and how big our bellies are looking especially after we’ve just eaten our body weight in cheese, pizza and pasta.’

‘It doesn’t seem right that I won’t be able to hear him say, ‘Just do it, Brookester, tell them how you feel. Try harder. We got on each other’s nerves, but it was because we were so passionate and cared so deeply.

‘We were both so stubborn and never wanted to back down. We had our differences, but the end of the day, we just wanted to love each other and we did.’

She also spoke of how her dad taught her resilience and strength and the need to stand up for herself and what she believe in and to always try her hardest at everything.

‘He would always tell us since we were little to be polite, manners are free, they cost nothing,’ she added.

Her younger sister Summer, 20, also broke down when she led the tributes as she recalled her last memories of being with her dad on March 2, two days before his shock death.

I’ve had to come to terms with the fact that you won’t be able to walk down the aisle on my special day,’ Summer said.

‘You’re never going to meet your grandchildren that you’re going to have some day, but instead you will be someone I will tell my kids about.

‘They would have loved and adored you just like I do.’

Summer said her father – as famous for his scandals off the pitch as his talents on it – ‘lived 100 lives, never took anything for granted and lived every day to the fullest.’

She recalled how she would come home from school to find the cricket legend waiting behind the kitchen counter, eating his beloved spaghetti bolognaise.

‘I would do anything to go back to that,’ Summer said.

Their brother Jackson, 23, described their father as the best dad anyone could ask for and his best friend.

His fondest memories of his dad is them doing everyday things together.

‘Time with you went way too fast. It feels just like yesterday that we were looking at each others cards playing poker, eating pizza while watching the Saints,’ Jackson said.

‘I’m never forget how much fun we had doing simple things, grocery shopping, watching movies or going for walks during lockdown.

‘We didn’t have to do much to be happy. Life was so easy and peaceful with you in it. You never pressured me into playing cricket and all you ever wanted for me was to be happy.’

The two-and-a-half hour memorial ended with Warne’s children unveiling the MCG’s renamed Great Southern Stand, now known as the Shane Warne Stand
