It was a textbook Manchester City goal with Kevin De Bruyne putting it on a plate as ever, despite crossing the ball in from the left on his weaker foot.

Haaland, who had earlier missed a crucial one-on-one chance, made no mistake this time as his superb movement enabled him to get in front of Joe Gomez to tuck home past Kelleher from about eight yards out with his left foot.

Social media erupted into a frenzy with football fans having been deprived of Haaland’s magnificence during the World Cup.

Former England defender Jamie Carragher, who was co-commentating the game for Sky Sports, was full of praise for the City striker and his team-mate Kevin De Bruyne.

Describing Haaland’s goal, he said: ‘That is what Man City deserved from this first 10 minutes. Two of the best players in the world (Haaland and Bryune) combining.

‘It is brilliant from Haaland but not great from Joe Gomez, who is sleeping. He gets his studs on it. He has been given one opportunity, he was not going to miss the second.’

Meanwhile, former England striker Dion Dublin, who was commentating on BBC Radio 5 Live, said: ‘It’s Patient, patient, patient play. Erling Haaland does so well, he goes out of the eyeline of the defenders and before you know it he’s across you.

‘A perfect centre forward’s goal.’

Haaland’s superb goal was shortly cancelled out by a well-taken finish from Liverpool youngster Fabio Carvalho to send both teams into the break level.
