Social media erupts with hilarious memes after Ricky Gervais roasts ‘woke Hollywood hypocrites’

Social media users praised Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais for his brutal roasting of the Hollywood celebrities in the audience

Hollywood’s biggest stars may still be recovering from the roasting they received during Ricky Gervais’ Golden Globes opening monologue Sunday night, but the internet didn’t waste a second sounding off about his tongue-lashing – or turning Tom Hanks’ reactions into a trendy meme.

‘this mans got more of a range and damage yield to him than a f**king intercontinental ballistic missile,’ wrote one Twitter user, approvingly.

During his opening monologue at the 77th Golden Globe awards, Gervais skewered ‘woke’ Hollywood, made jokes about Jeffrey Epstein, Harvey Weinstein and Prince Andrew, and tackled topics such as #MeToo and ISIS, leaving his A-list audience wincing during his opening monologue at the 77th Golden Globe awards.

Closeups of Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, and Gwyneth Paltrow revealed they were left with stunned looks on their faces as Gervais mocked celebrities in and out of the room during his eight-minute speech.

In a particularly blunt moment, Gervais advised those receiving awards to avoid making political speeches because ‘you’re in no position to the public about anything’ before adding: ‘If you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent, and your God and f*** off.’

People watching – and tweeting – at home hurried to social media to praise Gervais’ scathing comments and turn on-screen celebrity reactions into memes.

‘Man of the people,’ one Twitter user wrote. ‘Thank you for saying what needed to be said.’

‘Thank you @rickygervais!!!!! Suck it Hollywood,’ another tweeter wrote.

‘I don’t watch award shows and not into the celebrity scene,’ one tweeter admitted, ‘but boy did #RickyGervais skewer everyone. Wow.’ He then added a meme reading ‘shots fired.’

One Twitter user posted a gif from the US version of The Office – Gervais created the UK original –  reading ‘Nope. Don’t like that.’

‘The entire Golden Globes audience after being called out by Ricky Gervais for their hypocrisy. Bringing the fire,’ the tweeter added.

During the eight minute speech, Gervais also railed against the new brand of corporate giants dominating Tinsel Town.

‘Apple roared into the TV game with The Morning Show,’ he said, ‘a superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing…. made by a company that runs sweat shops in China.’

Ironically, Apple boss Tim Cook looked like a sweat shop himself as all eyes – and video cameras – turned to him in the audience.

‘When you get called out over your use of slave labour at a globally televised event,’ one Twitter user wrote, accompanying a grimacing Cook.

‘When you control a $1.3 trillion company but forgot that #RickyGervais literally gives zero f*cks…’ another tweeter wrote.

It was Tom Hanks’ variety of stunned reactions to Gervais’ statements that really captured the imagination of meme creators, however.

‘Tom Hanks is the only thing worth watching at the #GoldenGlobes,’ one person tweeted.

‘The face you make when the host just burned you and all your dumba** friends,’ one Twitter user wrote, attached to a screenshot of Hanks looking away and grimacing with puffed out cheeks.

Another Twitter user posted the same image, but wrote: ‘ Tom Hanks reaction to #Ricky Gervais opening monologue is like when you think it’s a far but it was not a fart.’

‘My mom always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get,’ another Twitter user wrote, quoting Forrest Gump, over a triptych of Hanks’ reactions.

One meme-maker turned Hanks, 63, christened Hanks as ‘Boomer,’ a likely reference to the ‘OK, boomer’ meme that was popularly used in 2019 as a way to mock attitudes commonly held by the baby boomer generation.
