Sofia Richie admits she struggled to ‘find her place in the world’ because she didn’t want to be a nepo baby and reveals why her lavish wedding to Elliot Grainge was a ‘professional turning point’

Sofia Richie has opened up on her struggle to ‘find my place in the world’ growing up and her lavish French wedding to Elliot Grainge earlier this year.

The 24-year-old model, who is the daughter of Lionel Richie, married the British music executive, 29, at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, France in April.

Covering Town & Country’s September issue, Sofia modelled a number of elegant ensembles, including a plunging sequinned cut-out dress and a silk leopard print number.

Speaking to the publication, she talked about her extravagant wedding ceremony, which saw her wear three different Chanel dresses and captured the public’s attention.

She said she was intimately involved in the planning process, saying: ‘I wanted it to feel timeless. I pored over photos of classic royal weddings and pulled in little things that I wanted.’

Sofia admitted that her wedding was a professional turning point in retrospect, but said she didn’t see it like that on the day.

She explained: ‘I do now. But for me my wedding wasn’t an event. It was my wedding.’

Speaking about her career aspirations when she was young, she revealed that her desire to not be a nepo baby caused her to experiment with different paths.

Sofia said: ‘I spent a lot of time just trying to find my place in the world. I think everyone wants to be like their parents when they’re growing up, and I admired my dad so much, and that drove me down a music path for a moment. But it didn’t feel right for me.

‘And then everyone told me, “You should be an actor!” I tried that for a period, but that wasn’t me either.

‘I didn’t have the experience, and I didn’t want to be one of those kid celebrities that got the role because my dad is who he is.’

She continued: ‘So I was like, “You know what? I know I’m not cut out for this. Let me just be myself”.’

Sofia added that having Lionel as a father did help her navigate being in the spotlight however, and gushed that he was her ‘role model’.

She said: ‘I learned how to deal with people knowing who you are from my dad. He handles it with such grace. He embraces everyone who comes up to him.

‘He’s appreciative, he’s thankful. He’s taught me to never have that ‘Oh god, not today’ attitude. He’s another level of megastar, and my whole life I’ve watched him.

‘I’ve never seen him say no to a picture. I’ve never seen him be rude to anyone who walks up to him on the street. That’s been my role model.’

Despite this, Sofia confessed she often suffered from anxiety in her teenage years, but has now become a lot more comfortable being in the public eye.

She said: ‘At age 22 I calmed down a lot. I think I’ve grown a lot in these last couple of years.’

Sofia added: ‘The truth is I’ve had a pretty lucky life, and I always try to remember that. It’s already been more than I could have dreamed of.’
