Star Entertainment Group is understood to be suing a high roller for gambling debts amassing $43million.

The Australian gaming and entertainment group claims Singaporean Dr Wong Yew Choy made the substantial loss at The Star Gold Coast establishment in Broadbeach, on the east coast of Queensland, in 2018.

However, Dr Wong is believed to have rebuffed the allegations, stating his debt should be written off due to dealing ‘errors’.

Dr Wong is believed to have racked up the debt over five days playing baccarat, a casino card game, during a trip to the Glitter Strip, The Gold Coast Bulletin reported.

Star first lodged its case in February and is suing Dr Wong in the High Court in Singapore.

It’s understood that Dr Wong had handed the casino a blank cheque, and the casino had filled in the amount they claim he owes.

However, when Dr Wong returned home to Singapore he’s reported to have instructed his bank to stop the blank cheque payment – claiming the casino had not prevented the ‘occurrence of mistakes’.

A spokesperson for Star said the business was pursuing the debt ‘vigorously’.

‘The Star is disappointed the situation involving Wong Yew Choy has forced us to escalate the matter to the Singapore High Court,’ they said.

‘However, we are pursuing the debt vigorously. We would not be wasting the court’s time unless we felt our position was extremely robust.

‘We have no further comment to make at this time,’ they concluded.
