State of Origin viewers slam Australian Idol winner Dylan Wright after he ‘butchers’ the national anthem with his ‘diabolical’ ‘hipster’ rendition: ‘Could be the worst in recent memory’

State of Origin viewers have savaged Dylan Wright’s performance of the national anthem at Game One on Wednesday night.

The 2024 Australian Idol winner delivered a stripped-down, guitar-based rendition of Advance Australia Fair to a packed house at Accor Stadium in Sydney.

However, many viewers took umbrage with the singer’s ‘diabolical’, ‘hipster’ interpretation of the anthem written by Scottish-born Australian composer Peter Dodds.

It wasn’t long before they flooded X, formerly known as Twitter, with their thoughts.

‘What is this the Hipster Anthem? Diabolical,’ wrote one viewer.

‘Nah f*ck off with this national anthem. You can’t do a cover of the anthem,’ added another.

‘Not a fan of artists putting their spin on the national anthem. Either sing it properly, or just play the Julie Anthony recording,’ commented one more.

‘Just when you thought the national anthem couldn’t be worse,’ wrote a fourth.

‘Could be the worst anthem rendition in recent memory,’ quipped another.

‘Get this singy singy anthem sh*t out of here and sing the anthem properly,’ commented one more.

Eagle-eyed viewers also noticed that Blues player Jake Trbojevic also appeared to take a disliking to what he was hearing, with his expression soon becoming a meme on social media.

However, there were viewers who loved Dylan’s soulful interpretation.

‘I really enjoyed the version of the Australian anthem,’ wrote one viewer.

‘Can we make that version the official anthem from now on?’ added another.

‘That anthem, though…. I absolutely loved it,’ commented a third alongside a red love heart emoji.

‘Ok I actually like this acoustic version of the anthem,’ added one more.

‘Quite possibly the best rendition of the national anthem I’ve ever heard,’ wrote another.
