A student has been shot by a toy gun in a drive-by shooting in Byron Bay.

The 32-year-old international student was shot by a Caucasian man while riding her bike on Jonson St on Wednesday evening.

The man was travelling in a black Land Rover and shot at her with a black plastic toy gun from the front passenger window.

She was hit near her knee on her right leg, leaving a welt the size of a ten cent piece.

The victim immediately went to police who examined her injury.

The occupants of the vehicle have been described as Caucasian men in their 20s and police are conducting an investigation.

Police have urged anyone with information on the incident to contact them.
