Super Mario is getting a remake – 27 years after Nintendo’s loved video game was first released

  • Super Mario RPG will be available to play on the Nintendo Switch in November
  • Nintendo is revamping the 1996 game with completely new graphics
  • Next year, fans can also expect an entirely new game centre around Peach

It’s been just two months since the Super Mario movie dominated cinema screens across the world, raking in $1billion.

But Nintendo isn’t quite finished with the franchise just yet, as creators prepare to revamp one of its classic videogames in just a few months.

Yesterday, the tech titan revealed that its vintage Super Mario RPG (role-playing) game will be available to play on any Nintendo Switch from November 17.

The game, which was released in 1996, follows the franchise’s classic characters including Peach, Bowser and of course, Mario.

It first came about on the retro Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) – one of the first Nintendo consoles to exist.

Sneak peek: Super Mario RPG will be available to play on the Nintendo Switch in November

‘Originally released on Super NES, Super Mario RPG has been overhauled with new graphics,’ Nintendo said.

‘Whether you played the original game or have yet to take the journey, you can dive into this Nintendo Switch version of the very first RPG in the Super Mario series.’

Super Mario RPG was one of the first in the franchise to come to life in a 3D environment on screen.

Unlike the adventure-based game of Super Mario Bros, its RPG version saw characters partake in turn-based combat using special items and attacks.

The reboot will be just the same but with ‘overhauled graphics’, as characters face numerous challenges ‘with twists, turns and treasure’.

Nintendo added: ‘Mario must team up with his allies to face down a menacing force known as the Smithy Gang in order to recover seven stars and repair the Star Road.’

Even still, Super Mario RPG  is by no means the only Mario game coming to the Switch this year.

Super Mario Bros Wonder is also coming to the store on October 20, with Princess Peach, Princess Daisy and Yoshi all playable characters.

The course-based game will also see a bizarre debut of a new ‘power-up’ that allows Mario to transform into an Elephant-like character.

Nintendo continued: ‘When you touch a Wonder Flower in the game, the wonders of the world unlock – pipes could come alive, hordes of enemies may appear, characters might change their looks, for example – transforming the gameplay in unpredictable ways.’

To top it off, fans can expect the launch of a new game in 2024 that’s centred entirely around Princess Peach – but the firm is yet to dish the details.

‘Princess Peach will star as the main character in her own new game, which will be available in 2024,’ Nintendo said.

‘Stay tuned for more information about this game in the future.’
