Surfer dies after being attacked by a shark off the NSW coast near famous Snapper Rocks break

A surfer has died after being attacked by a shark at a popular surf spot off the northern New South Wales coast.

The 50-year-old man was surfing at Casuarina Beach near Kingscliff when he was bitten about 10.40am Sunday, a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman told AAP. 

A NSW Police spokeswoman said the man died after the attack.

The beach has been cleared as helicopters, jet skis and drones scour the ocean to locate the shark. 

Paramedics attempted to treat the man’s injuries but he unfortunately died at the scene. 

It is not yet known where he was bitten or what type of shark it was. 

Kingscliff is located just south of the famous Snapper Rocks surf break on the Gold Coast.
