A photo of Fanning with Lewis was shared to Facebook by Toll Ambulance Rescue, showing the surfer giving a thumbs up while waiting with the youngster.

‘Declan was in good spirits thanks to a few friendly faces,’ the ambulance service posted.

Declan’s mother saying Fanning’s presence made the subsequent flight to Canberra Hospital more bearable for him.

‘Having surfing legend by his side put a huge smile on Declan’s face and a helicopter ride made for an eventful day,’ Fiona Lewis posted to Facebook.

‘Declan remembers the event and how Dr Helen supported him and talked him through the entire process. We truly can’t thank you enough.’

The youngster suffered a fractured pelvis but was recovering well in hospital.

Social media users praised Fanning for helping Declan.

‘Great job Toll, so glad Declan is OK and wow, love Mick Fanning, what a great role model,’ one person said.

‘When I eventually break something the next time we surf together, make sure Fanno shows up or don’t bother calling the ambulance,’ another person said.
