Survey finds 35 per cent of people lie about how much they recycle

That’s rubbish! Survey finds 35 per cent of people lie about how much they recycle and 25 per cent fib about shunning their cars for bikes

  • Survey was carried out by research firm Decision Technology on 2,497 UK adults
  • Found out 87 per cent of people said they had recycled in previous seven days
  • But in fact only 52 per cent really had done and was put down to ‘social boasting’

Fed up with friends boasting about their green credentials? Take heart, they could well be talking rubbish – nearly nine out of ten people say they recycle but only half actually do.

A survey found that 87 per cent of people claimed to have recycled in the previous seven days but only 52 per cent really had done.

Sixty per cent of those polled claimed to have travelled by bike instead of by car or public transport in the previous week when those who actually had done was just 35 per cent.

And while 37 per cent of people claimed to have bought organic food produce within the past month, only 23 per cent had really done so.

Henry Stott, spokesman for research firm Decision Technology, which surveyed 2,497 UK adults, said: ‘When it comes to ethical behaviour, our research suggests consumers are often more Pinocchio than Attenborough.

‘This can be explained by social boasting, where people exaggerate their behaviours so as to conform to social expectations. As social creatures, we care about what other people think of us.’
