Women outstrip men when it comes to getting inked, according to new report on tattoos in Australia.

The survey, conducted by McCrindle Research, found tattoos have reached a record high in the country with one in five people going under the needle for one or more tattoos.

Women are two per cent more likely to be inked, with 21 per cent of the female population displaying a tattoo compared to 19 per cent of men, News Corp reported.

McCrindle Research spokeswoman Ashley Fell said Queensland was the state with the highest rate of tattoos at 26 per cent of the population.

The sunshine state was followed by NSW and Victoria.

Ms Fell said the state percentages were influenced by warmer climates and beach culture as people are more inclined to get inked when the designs can be shown off.

Ms Fell said tattoos are a permanent way to mark milestones such as marriages, first paycheques and christenings in a way that previous generations had not.

The anti-social stigma of tattoos has also dissipated and they have become ‘normalised’.

Ms Fell said the ‘normalising’ of tattoos was encouraged by sports stars and celebrities who display their illustrated bodies on social media.

More than half of all inked Australians got their first tattoo between 18 and 25.

More than a third (36 per cent) were 26 or older when they got their first tattoo.

Sixty-one per cent of Australians with a tattoo have more than one and women (42 per cent) are more likely to have more than one tattoo than men (36 per cent).

A third of people have some degree of tattoo regret and almost one in 10 have looked into tattoo removal.
