A suspected pedophile has been found dead in his Colorado prison cell just days after being arrested for allegedly killing a nine-year-old girl with chloroform while trying to sexually assault her.

Jeffrey Beagley, 34, was found unresponsive in his cell on Monday at the Mesa County Jail in Grand Junction and was later confirmed dead in hospital.

The medical examiner is waiting for toxicology results before releasing an official cause of death but said Beagley’s death does not appear to be suspicious.

Beagley was arrested just nine days earlier on a string of charges in relation to the little girl’s death.

Police had been investigating Beagley ever since they found the girl dead in a Grand Junction home on November 9.

The girl had lived at the home with her mother, sister and Beagley. Her name and relationship to Beagley has not been released.

According to his arrest affidavit, Beagley allegedly killed the girl with chloroform.

Police said they found an empty 100-millimeter bottle of chloroform and a rag inside a shed when they searched the home.

Beagley is believed to have ordered chloroform online and it was delivered to the home the day before the girl was killed.

When confronted with the chloroform’s order receipt, Beagley initially told officers that he ordered the substance for hemp production.

Also inside the shed were blankets and pillows set up on the ground, as well as heaters, a computer monitor, laptop, video camera, masks, balloons, sex toys and lubricants.

Some of the blankets had drops of blood on them.

Police obtained search warrants for the electronic devices and located a thumb drive with more than 1,600 child porn images and 75 videos of a similar nature.

Some of the images allegedly involved the victim.

Detectives allegedly found some child porn images where Beagley’s face had been digitally altered into the photo, including one that showed an adult man raping a child.

The home where Beagley lived was described by investigators as ‘macabre’.

A ‘Witch’s Bible’ and several headless dolls were found inside the home.

Beagley was arrested on December 13 for first-degree murder, child abuse resulting in death, reckless manslaughter, attempted sex assault on a child, sexual exploitation of children and invasion of privacy for sexual gratification.

He was being held without bond and was due to face court on December 31.
