Sydney’s based start-up has launched one of the most expensive milk on the market at $5 a litre

REVEALED: Why this ‘super’ milk – at more than $5 a litre – is the most expensive on the market

  • A Sydney-based firm has launched one of the most expensive milk on the market
  • Made By Cow is offering its milk in two sizes, 1.5litre for $6 and 750ml for $4
  • The company says its milk is exactly the same as raw milk but without bacteria
  • It doesn’t heat pasteurise the milk, instead it uses a cold-pressure technology

An Australian company has launched the most expensive milk on the market, selling at more than $5 a litre.

Sydney-based start-up Made By Cow claims its product is exactly the same as raw milk – but without the harmful bacteria.

‘It’s the most expensive milk on the market, but it is the most expensive to make,’ Made By Cow co-founder Saxon Joye told news.com.au.

The company says unlike other brands, it doesn’t heat pasteurise its milk and instead uses world-first technology to eliminate harmful bacteria.

It places sealed milk bottles into a high pressure processing vessel, which is then filled with cold water.

The water is pressurised via pumps to kill bacteria, giving milk 10 days extra shelf life and added health benefits.

‘All the things heat-based processing does to milk like squashing vitamins and enzymes, cold press does not,’ Mr Joye said.

‘Heat pasteurisation has been fantastic, but the technology has moved on, and we can now offer a raw product with extra shelf life that’s absolutely unmessed with that’s safe to drink, and it’s been very well embraced.’

Made By Cow says unlike other brands, it is sourcing milk from a single herd near Barry, a small town in the Central West region of NSW.

‘Cold pressed Raw Milk is milked from a single Jersey herd, bottled and sealed just hours later, then cold pressurised (in the sealed bottle) the following day,’ it said.

‘Direct from cow, to bottle, to you.’

The company is offering its milk in two sizes, 1.5 litres for $6 and 750ml for $4 through 300 retailers, including Harris Farm, IGA and speciality organic shops.

The retailers are expected to stock up Made by Cow milk from September.

Sale of raw milk is prohibited in Australia, but the Federal Government has allowed  high pressure processing (HPP) technology as an alternative to heat pasteurisation two years ago.

Made By Cow says it has all the necessary approvals from the NSW Food Authority.
