The Block 2022: Meet Australia’s first Muslim team

Playful best friends Omar and Oz charm their fellow competitors on the season premiere of The Block

The Block’s Omar and Oz are the first Muslim team to compete on the renovation reality show  and they charmed their co-stars on Sunday’s premiere.

Omar is a professional football player while Oz works in property maintenance, with the team happy to be part of the changing face of the show.

Oz said the pair were not the ‘atypical reality stars’ that usually compete on the popular Nine renovation show.

‘We’re definitely not blonde hair and blue eyes,’ he said, pointing to himself and best friend Omar.

‘[We are] Middle Eastern, we are Muslims. That’s why we wanted to take the opportunity to show we are a multicultural country.’

Omar agreed, acknowledging they are the first Muslims to ever be on The Block.

‘It’s a big step for us in itself,’ Omar said. ‘The first month we are there we’ll be doing Ramadan,’ he added.

Fasting during Ramadan means abstinence from all food or drink, including water and chewing gum, from dawn to sunset.

‘Nil by mouth, it’s a time for sacrificing and realising how blessed we are living in a country like Australia,’ Omar said.

The pair joked at the possible perception of Block fans of them, with Omar saying some people might consider them a pair of jokers.

‘These jokers have no idea what they are in for,’ Omar said, laughing.

‘They’ll probably be surprised. But most people will say we need a change,’ Oz added.

The pair said they would be undertaking Ramadan on the show which means they'll be fasting from dawn to sunset

Elsewhere, Oz revealed he has never watched an episode of The Block.

‘I watched The Block, but he [Oz] hasn’t watched The Block,’ Omar confessed.

‘I’m going to be honest with you. I haven’t watched The Block. Not one season,’ Oz added. ‘I’m just going to get there and do my best, that’s it,’ he finished.
