The Boys star Antony Starr reveals the secret ingredient he adds to his protein shakes for ‘good healthy fats’ to stay in superhero shape

Antony Starr isn’t a superhero, he just plays one on TV.

But the New Zealander actor, 48, has a secret ingredient for keeping him in super shape to play Homelander on the Prime Video series The Boys.

He revealed on Men’s Health ‘Eat Like…’ that he adds a tablespoon of peanut butter to his post-workout protein shakes ‘just to give it a little bit more texture.’

It also adds ‘a little thickness, a little sweetening without being over the top, and also you know you’re getting good healthy fats.’

‘I have to keep myself almost exactly the same shape for the entire seven, eight-month shoot,’ Starr noted later in the video.

Starr revealed what whipped him into shape and forced him to start his ‘toughest diet’ yet when he first joined the show that premiered in 2019.

‘In season one, they tried to put me in a corset, which was not pleasant and kind of embarrassing,’ he recalled.

‘So, I trained like crazy for two weeks to get rid of it, and I thankfully never wore a corset onscreen,’ added Starr.

The Cobweb actor acknowledged ‘it’s harder to stay in shape’ once you reach 40, noting that he focuses on his nutrition, stretching and yoga.

‘In the off-season, I’m much less conscious of shape and more conscious of what’s going on internally and trying to stay healthy,’ he said.

‘Once we’re starting to get towards the season, then I have to get back into that spandex suit, my little spand-y friend,’ Starr explained.

‘I actually have to start considering a lot more what I’m eating.’

His go-to foods are scrambled eggs, sourdough toast and avocado in the morning, as well as a crudité for a snack and a chicken breast for lunch.

Starr goes ‘clean and lean’ through the week, but ‘anything goes’ on the weekend, when he likes to cheat with a burger and a milkshake.

Based on the comic book series of the same name, The Boys follows the titular group of renegades seeking to expose the superhero group The Seven and their abuses of power funded by the multibillion-dollar conglomerate Vought.

Starr plays Homelander, leader of The Seven and the strongest superhero in the world, whose sadistic nature is often concealed from the public.

He recently reunited onscreen with co-stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Erin Moriarty, Chace Crawford and Laz Alonso for the season four trailer.

Season four of The Boys premieres June 13 on Prime Video.
