The Killers explain how they’ve managed to avoid the stereotypical trappings of rockstars and reveal they’ve been enjoying life in lockdown

They’ve enjoyed a stellar music career spanning 19 years, but The Killers confessed they’re not your typical rockstars.

Appearing on The Project on Thursday, lead singer Brandon Flowers and drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. admitted they’re far removed from the stereotypical expectations of a rockstar, even though they ‘gave it a good shot’.

Brandon, 39, credited his idols, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, of being an influence on his mild-mannered nature.

‘When I came across people like Springsteen and Tom Petty, it reminded me of my dad. I thought, I can be myself and still be creative. Still be an artist. I’ve never been the same,’ he confessed.

But he admitted he did go through a ‘weird’ phase early on in his career when he tried to live up to the rockstar lifestyle.

‘I was at a weird crossroads when we had the success of our first record,’ he explained.

‘I was into the idea of this debauchery and rock and roll and stepping into these boots. When you start a band, you think about that stuff.’

And while most people are starting to go stir crazy in lockdown, The Killers admitted they’ve been enjoying the change of pace.

‘I don’t remember last time we were home in the summer,’ admitted Ronnie, 44.

‘I’m enjoying my time at home with the wife, making food and reading books. I’m reading a lot. It’s great.’

Meanwhile, Brandon revealed he was taking pleasure in life’s simpler things, admitting it had been years since he’d been able to enjoy a sunset.

‘Usually, we get ready for a gig when it’s sunset time. I’m seeing more sunsets than I usually see,’ he explained, describing them as ‘beautiful’.
