The Oaks, south-west Sydney: Massive blaze breaks out

Fire crews are battling an ‘out of control’ blaze in Sydney’s south-west as bushfires rage across the state.

The fire started at a property on Montpelier Drive in The Oaks, north-west of Picton, on Monday and is threatening to spread east towards Sunnyside Road.

The area has been under a total fire ban after the fire danger rating was elevated to extreme.

Eight hectares of bushland have already been engulfed by the blaze, with the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSWRFS) describing it as ‘out of control’.

Footage of the fire shows firefighters on the scene attempting to control the grass fire as it threatens nearby farm-land.

Two bushfires near Tenterfield, in the states north, continue to burn out of control as residents have been advised to ‘stay alert and monitor your surroundings’.

A blaze near Woodisde’s Frost Road, 17km west of Tenterfield, has burnt through 250 hectares of land as it spreads north towards the Bruxner Highway.

‘People in the vicinity of the Bruxner Highway should prepare now,’ the NSWRFS website reads.

The other bushfire, starting around 70km east of Tenterfield on Oglivie Road, Tablum, has reportedly destroyed 65 hectares according to a NSWRFS report at 2:34pm on Monday.

NSWRFS urge residents nearby to Plains Station Road to similarly prepare as the fire spreads east.

More to come.
