Water view apartments near the beach in cities with plenty of jobs can be snapped up for just $350,000.

For a half the price of a beach-side unit in Sydney, it is possible to buy houses and apartments in regional coastal areas where the unemployment rate is well below the national average.

Cairns, in tropical far north Queensland, has median house price of just $391,338 while equivalent unit values stand at $325,307, CoreLogic data shows.

Cairns has a jobless rate of just 4.4 per cent, which is well below the national average. There, it is possible to buy an apartment with water views for just $355,000

In between those levels, a one-bedroom apartment with water views on the Esplanade is selling for $355,000.

The jobless rate in Cairns of 4.4 per cent is also significantly below the national average of 5.2 per cent and well under the decade-average for the city of 7.5 per cent, a CommSec analysis of Australian Bureau of Statistics data found.

Those after more sub-tropical temperatures can try Tweed Heads in northern New South Wales.

The town on the Queensland border has a jobless rate of just 4.1 per cent, which is much lower than the decade-average of 6.6 per cent.

Tweed Heads, one suburb from Coolangatta on the Gold Coast, has a median unit price of $426,034.

For even less than that, a one-bedroom apartment with views of the Pacific Ocean is selling for $405,000.

Beach living and jobs

Cairns, Queensland, has a 4.4 per cent jobless rate and a median unit price of $325,307

Tweed Heads, NSW, has a 4.1 per cent unemployment rate and a median unit price of $426,034

Warrnambool, Victoria, has a 2.9 per cent jobless rate and a median unit price of just $249,314

Sydney’s Sutherland Shire has a 2.2 per cent unemployment rate. Units at Cronulla have a median price of $766,675

Sydney’s northern beaches has a jobless rate of 2.8 per cent. Apartments in Manly have a median price of $1.2million but Dee Why is more affordable at $690,976

Median house prices in the coastal town are a little dearer at $631,601. 

Victoria also has a town with ocean views and low unemployment.

There, houses have a median price of just $357,022 or almost half of Melbourne’s $709,092. Units are even cheaper at $249,314. 

Sydney’s Sutherland Shire area has Australia’s lowest unemployment rate of 2.2 per cent.

It is pricey though with apartments in Cronulla having a median price of $766,675. 

Sydney’s northern beaches also has a low unemployment rate of just 2.9 per cent and is even more exclusive. 

Units in Manly have a median price of more than $1.2million while 7km north, apartments at Dee Why have a mid-point price of $690,976. 

Sydney’s centre centre is certainly out of the question for many people, despite its 2.9 per cent jobless rate.

Apartments at The Rocks, directly across Circular Quay from the Opera House, have a median price of $1.3million which most likely don’t come with water views.
