Revealed: The top five sex trends of 2020 – and it’s all about long distance play, ‘male pleasure’ and hands-free technology

  • Sex experts have predicted the top sex toy and pleasure trends for 2020
  • They include a focus on ‘male pleasure’ and the rise of virtual reality
  • Responsive technology allows people to use vibrators and toys hands-free

A group of leading sex experts from across the globe have predicted the top sex trends for 2020 – and this year it looks as though it’s all about long distance play and a focus on ‘male pleasure’.

Pleasure product brand We-Vibe has rounded up the top five trends so far, with the brand’s head of ‘Sexual Empowerment’, Johanna Rief, saying improved technology and inclusive toy design have played a large role in determining what’s popular.

She also believes the proven links between sexual pleasure and positive mental health have led to a boost in the global sex toy market.

A group of leading sex experts from across the globe have predicted the top sex trends for 2020 – and this year it looks as though it’s all about long distance play and a focus on ‘male pleasure’

1. VR, 3D PRINTING AND SEX ROBOTS

Advancements in virtual reality will make it possible to have sex with anyone, at any time, in any place (just like in Black Mirror’s 2019 Striking Vipers episode) while 3D printing is set to revolutionise toys over the next decade.

The latter will lead to people  printing their own fully customised, personalised vibrators at home.

Meanwhile, sex dolls are set to become robotic, using artificial intelligence and machine learning to be fully reactive and responsive to touch and feel.

2. THE MALE PLEASURE MOVEMENT

The development of sex toys to date has primarily been driven by women and their requirements, with the first wand vibrator developed as a masturbation aid to treat hysteria and back problems.

But this year, the rise in self-pleasure popularity has opened the field to men as well.

Prostate stimulation is becoming less and less taboo, and men are being encouraged to sexperiment with this pleasure centre by using toys like the new We-Vibe Vector.

3. SEXUAL MINDFULNESS

In our busy world, many wellbeing experts are encouraging us to ‘slow down’ and practice mindfulness to live a more fulfilling life – and the sex world is no different.

A trend towards mindful ‘slow’ sex is taking off and leading sex educators are telling students to utilise techniques more commonly found in yoga and meditation to have slow, fulfilling sexual experiences and encouraging experimentation solo and as a couple.

This year, the ‘most powerful wand vibrator on the market’ in the form of the Wand has launched, which uses ‘Smart Silence’ technology ensuring utter peace and tranquility for ‘sexual mindfulness’ sessions.

How ‘normal’ is your sex life?

* 71% of Australian millennials have lost their virginity by the time they are 18

* Gen Z is losing their virginity earlier than their millennial counterparts with the average age for virginity loss amongst Gen Z being 16

* Most people are having sex 5+ times per month, with 61% of Australians having sex at least 5 times per month with an average of 9 times per month

* 53% of young Australians have had between 1 and 5 sexual partners

* 52% of females report being in a committed romantic relationship compared to only 37% of males

4. RESPONSIVE TECHNOLOGY

Typically, sex toys have buttons and remotes to help users control settings, vibrations and intensity.

But advances in technology will see these toys becoming more responsive and intuitive to touch, removing the awkwardness of fumbling for a remote during sexual play.

The new Chorus comes with a squeeze remote, increasing or decreasing the intensity of the couple’s vibrator with just a touch, or an additional setting allows the intensity of vibrations to be determined by movements of the body against the vibrator itself for hands-free pleasure.

5. LONG DISTANCE PLAY

In an increasingly global world, travel and long-distance relationships are becoming common place.

Instead of relying on phone and video to aid in keeping the spark alive, couples can use app controls to connect to their partner’s vibrator.
