Reports say that the thieves switched off an electricity supply to the museum at 5am before breaking in through a window.

A fire broke out on a bridge nearby overnight and it is believed that the blaze may be connected to the electricity failure.

After breaking in, the thieves allegedly stole jewellery, diamonds and precious stones worth hundreds of millions of pounds.

However, it is believed that surveillance cameras may have captured the thieves on video despite the electrical failure.

The thieves are said to have escaped in a limousine and their current whereabouts are unknown.

The museum dates back to 1723 and was rebuilt after the bombing of Dresden in World War II.

Founded by Augustus the Strong, an 18th-century elector of Saxony, it houses priceless treasures including historic coins and jewellery.
