David Bailey has come to define the Swinging Sixties with his iconic black and white images of pop stars, models, politicians and royalty.
And now the snapper is to make waves all over again with his first book of fashion photographs dedicated to the 1980s, which will include many unseen images of the supermodels of the day.
‘It’s my first book of my fashion photographs,’ he tells me. ‘I don’t know why I haven’t done one before, but it’s taken a while to get this one together.’

Bailey and his team have been sifting through dozens of boxes of negatives and contact sheets stored at his London studio and at his two warehouses in the West Country where he has a home.
‘I’m chronicling the fashions of the decade,’ he explains.
‘I haven’t decided on a title yet but the book will include Jerry Hall, Christy Turlington, [ex-wife] Marie Helvin, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and my [fourth] wife Catherine Bailey (nee Dyer).’
The rough-talking East Ender is renowned for his insatiable appetite for the opposite sex.
Despite his four marriages and numerous girlfriends, he is still in touch and remains friends with all of them. ‘I get on with all my ex-wives,’ the 83-year-old snapper insists.

Marriage to his first wife, typist Rosemary Bramble, lasted five years ending in 1964. He then married the French actress Catherine Deneuve in 1965, which ended in 1972.
Then he wed American model Marie Helvin in 1975, which lasted ten years. Bailey has clocked up 35 years of marriage, so far, with model Catherine, who at 59 is 24 years his junior.
They met when she was just 19, on a fashion shoot for Italian Vogue on the Isle of Skye, and they have three children.
‘Catherine gets on with my ex-wives and girlfriends, too,’ Bailey adds. ‘If someone who lives with someone for more than ten months and then spends the rest of their lives hating that person, there is something wrong.’
His first muse, Jean Shrimpton, reflected last year in his autobiography Look Again: ‘He could come on strong, a bit, at times… He’d be in trouble today. But nobody objected. He was very fancied by everybody.’

‘I relate to her passion and her open heart,’ she says. ‘I think people want to be more like Linda. I think she would have probably become a groupie and gone to parties with Mick Jagger.’
