Former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow posted a heartbreaking tribute to his dog, Bronco, who had to be put to sleep.

In a video posted to Instagram on Wednesday, Tebow is shown giving his four-legged friend a piece of cheese before he breaks down in tears and hugs the animal for a final time.

‘One of the toughest goodbyes. Wanted to make a special tribute to the sweetest boy ever – thank you for all the joy you brought and all the memories,’ he wrote in the tear-jerking post.

‘Aunt Patty, thank you for loving him, and thank you to all the other people including Miss Shea and Miss Mindy for sharing so much love with Bronco. If you had the pleasure of meeting Bronco, one of the best dogs ever, I would love to hear your story,’ he wrote.

Tebow was given Bronco, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, as a gift after he was drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2010.

He has long spoken about his love of dogs and would even refer to Bronco as ‘his son’.

‘For so many people, dogs are our best friends and they provide so much joy and love,’ Tebow told AOL.com last year.

He told how the ‘sweet and loving’ Bronco was always by his side.

He spoke about how he had always been a dedicated dog owner and when he was younger he would sneak out and sleep in his parents’ garage with his pets because they weren’t allowed inside the house.

He posted several tributes to the Rhodesian Ridgeback on his Twitter account on Wednesday night including a picture of him kneeling by the dog’s grave having buried his beloved pet.

‘I’m so thankful and humbled by everyone’s support, prayers and love. I was able to lay Bronco to rest in a really special place. Thank you all for so much encouragement. I love you Bronco, thanks for being the sweetest boy.’
