Legendary singer and Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll Tina Turner died aged 83 on Wednesday.
The Best hitmaker died earlier in the day at her home in Switzerland following a long illness, her publicist revealed, though an exact cause of death was not initially revealed.
Turner – born Anna Mae Bullock in 1939 in Brownsville, Tennessee – rose to fame as part of the Ike and Tina Turner duo in the 70s – but behind closed doors Ike was inflicting sickening violence on Tina.
The star ended her marriage to Ike and left with her four sons – before pulling off one of the greatest musical comebacks in history.
By the early 80s, she was a musical powerhouse in her own right, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the world’s most revered rock stars.
Electrifying performances with Mick Jagger and David Bowie set her success on fire and she was quickly celebrated with awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Throughout her career, Turner won eight Grammys from 25 nominations and three lifetime Grammy Awards. Her final stadium concert was in Sheffield, England, in 2009. Here, DailyMail looks back on the music icon’s life in pictures:

Private Dancer: After signing with Capitol Records the star – considered to be past her prime – scored a surprise hit with a cover of Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together in 1983. She then recorded monster hit album Private Dancer in just two weeks in 1984 which sold 10 million copies (seen 1985)
First number one: In May 1984, Capitol issued the album’s second single, What’s Love Got to Do With It which scored Turner her first and only Billboard number one (pictyred 1985)
Wow: Following the album’s release, Turner joined Lionel Richie (pictured) as the opening act on his Can’t Slow Down tour – she would win four Grammys in 1985 for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, and Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female for the single and album What’s Love Got to Do with It

Film star: Turner traveled to Australia to star opposite Mel Gibson in the 1985 post-apocalyptic film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome – her first acting role in ten years
Sexy: Turner is seen with Mick Jagger during the 1985 Live Aid concert in Philadelphia. It was an iconic performance with palpable chemistry. Turner toured with the Rolling Stones in the late 60s
Acclaimed: In 1986, Turner released her sixth solo album, Break Every Rule which sold over five million copies worldwide. Her Break Every Rule World Tour, which began in March 1987 (pictured) was the third highest-grossing tour by a female artist in North America that year
The Best: Turner released the Foreign Affair album in 1989 (pictured that year) which reached No. 1 in eight countries and included one of her signature songs, The Best – a cover of Bonnie Tyler’s hit
1990: The star is seen performing at London’s Wembley Stadium on her Foreign Affair European Tour
Touring again: Turner returned to the studio in 1995, releasing GoldenEye for the James Bond film GoldenEye. This was followed by the Wildest Dreams album in 1996 and tour – before her final solo album Twenty Four Seven and tour (pictured) in 2000 – she later announced her retirement at 60

Comeback in 2008: Tina made a surprise appearance with Beyonce at the 2008 Grammys – and would also win an award as a featured artist on River: The Joni Letters
Second retirement: In October 2008, Turner embarked on her first tour in nearly ten years with the Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour – the following year she would retire from performing once again
