Toowoomba landlord says tenant left maggots, poo, rubbish and sanitary pads in the home

Landlady’s $30,000 clean-up bill for nightmare tenants who left maggots, poo and 80 bins of rubbish in the property may mean she’ll never lease it again despite city’s chronic shortage of rentals

A landlord has revealed how her home was left full of faeces, sanitary pads, maggots and urine by nightmare tenants.

The home in Toowoomba was left in such a state the clean-up bill is estimated at $30,000 with the landlady questioning whether she will ever lease the property again.

Pictures of the property show the home left in a disgusting state, containing 80 bins of rubbish and excrement.

The town of Toowoomba has one of the lowest vacancy rates in Queensland of under one per cent.

The property was being rented at $485 a week with a bond of around $1,900.

Despite the relatively cheap comparative rent and the competitive market climate, the tenant has done a runner, leaving behind a property that is utterly trashed.

The landlord is considering if she will ever rent out her property again after it was left by tenants full of faeces, sanitary pads, trash, maggots and urine (pictured)

The landlady, who chose not to be named, told the Courier Mail the state it was left in was ‘too extreme’.

‘The maggots. The defecation. Used women’s sanitary pads everywhere… If you’re just dirty or messy, it is not to this stage. This is too much,’ she said.

‘This kind of destructive behaviour makes landlords not want to continue to advertise the property on the market for rent as the emotional and physical cost to fix is too much.’

The Toowoomba woman has now taken the matter to court with insurers refusing to even enter the property until the faeces, maggots and rubbish is removed.

She has incurred close to $7,000 in costs to date after needing a skip bin and cleaners to begin the restoration process.

The tenant’s possessions remain in the house and she is waiting word on what her obligation is in regard to them.

She also fears the cost could blow out into the tens of thousands as appliances such as the oven and air-conditioning units either are infested with maggots or animal faeces.

The kitchen cupboards and the rest of the house were much the same and she says there was so much urination throughout the home she had to wait weeks before she could even enter.

With the Toowoomba vacancy rate at 0.6 per cent, the landlord says she is even more stunned at what has transpired considering she believes she charges a comparatively cheap rental price.

‘You will find it impossible to find anything of a similar size and price in the market nowadays in Toowoomba,’ she said.

The property was acquired by the woman in 2015 and with tradies in short supply, she doesn’t know when – or even if – she will be able to bring it back to the market.

She is still waiting on assessors to estimate the cost but she believes it will cost at least $30,000 in repairs.
