Tottenham are set to rival Aston Villa in the race to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher and are ready to make their move ahead of this month’s profit and sustainability deadline.

Spurs have a strong interest in the England international and preparing to make an offer for the Blues star, who is also a target Atletico Madrid.

Indeed, Tottenham sense an opportunity to secure a good value deal for Gallagher before June 30, the cut off for clubs to include transfers in their next set of accounts.

Chelsea are under pressure to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability (PSR) guidelines and because Gallagher is an academy raised player he would represent pure profit on their balance sheet.

Gallagher is entering the final 12 months of his deal and while Chelsea have tried to tie him down to new terms there is no agreement in place as things stand.

And Spurs want to take advantage of Chelsea’s precarious position in terms of PSR and the 24-year-old contractual situation before the end of June.

Gallagher will almost certainly be named in Gareth Southgate’s final squad for Euro 2024 on Saturday, and there is a sense that all parties would prefer his future to be resolved before the tournament gets underway to prevent any distractions in Germany.

Villa have already opened talks with Chelsea over their interest in Gallagher, and the fact the Midlands side can offer him Champions League football next season could be a factor in his future.

Tottenham are aware of the difficulties that may arise in trying to lure Gallagher across London, particularly given the player’s deep-rooted Chelsea connections.

There are no guarantees Tottenham will continue to pursue Gallagher beyond the PSR deadline.

Chelsea want a minimum of £50million for Gallagher. The Blues sold fellow Blues academy graduate Mason Mount in deal worth an initial £55million, rising to £60m, last summer. Chelsea will seek a similar fee for Gallagher this summer.

Stamford Bridge officials have been impressed with the way Gallagher has conducted himself throughout the uncertainty over his future.

While talks over a deal haven’t gone according to plan, the midfielder hasn’t allowed the uncertainty to disrupt his season.
