Trump congratulates US women for World Cup win despite players saying they would snub his invitation to the White House

  • The US Women’s Soccer Team defeated the Netherlands in the final on Sunday
  • Trump tweeted: ‘Congratulations to the US Women’s Soccer Team on winning the World Cup! Great and exciting play. America is proud of you all!’
  • The president has been feuding with co-captain Megan Rapinoe, who said she had no intention of visiting ‘the f***ing White House’ during a January interview
  • A video of her statement resurfaced in June and was not well received by Trump
  • Trump hit back on Twitter last week, writing: ‘I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS!
  • He added: ‘We haven’t yet invited Megan or the team, but I am now inviting the TEAM, win or lose’
  • Teammate Ali Krieger said she would stand by Rapinoe, while Alex Morgan has said the squad will make the decision together after Sunday’s final

Donald Trump congratulated the US Women’s Soccer Team for defeating the Netherlands in the World Cup final on Sunday despite at least two of the players’ promises to snub his invitation to the White House.

‘Congratulations to the US Women’s Soccer Team on winning the World Cup! Great and exciting play. America is proud of you all!’ the president tweeted about an hour after the final whistle.

The feud between Trump and the American squad has been hanging over the tournament ever since video resurfaced from a January interview where co-captain Megan Rapinoe said she would not visit ‘the f***ing White House’.

Her strong statement was not well received by the president, who responded by scolding Rapinoe on Twitter and saying he would welcome the team whether they won the Cup or not.

Teammate Ali Krieger later came out and said she would stand by Rapinoe in skipping the White House visit, while leading-scorer Alex Morgan said the squad would make that decision together after the final.

Now with a fourth World Cup win under their belts, it’s unclear whether any of the players will take Trump up on his offer – if it even still stands.
