Jelena Ostapenko was not happy with a loud fan in the stands of her US Open third round match, and took matters into her own hands on Friday.

Leading 4-1 in the third set against Bernarda Pera, the Latvian walked over near where the fan was seated and shouted at him to leave.

Ostapenko angrily waved her arms at the fan, who had been warned multiple times by the umpire earlier in the match.

While one of the TV broadcasters for the match questioned whether Ostapenko should have gotten involved with the fan, her assertiveness worked as the man walked away with his drink to the delight of the crowd.

Ostapenko would go on to win the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to move onto the fourth round.

Court 17, where the match took place, has seen complaints from several players this year due to its strong odor of marijuana.

But Ostapenko was more bothered by the heckling.

‘With the weed, it’s a normal thing. Every match I smell it. It’s not a surprise they were complaining about,’ she said after the match.

‘But, yeah, this fan, I was leading 4-1 in the third set, and then suddenly I served a serve and he started to shout like crazy. Yeah, not like one or two words, I think two sentences in a row. Of course, the chair umpire told him to be quiet.

‘I mean, he just left after the chair umpire told him something, so it was like go, go.’

She will face no. 1 seed Iga Swiatek on Sunday.
