Varsity Lakes house fire: Italian tourist Simona Udenzi wakes from a coma to discover a quarter of her body has been ‘burnt to a crisp’

A woman pulled from a burning home by firefighters has woken from a coma and found out she has severe burns to more than a quarter of her body.

Emergency services were called to the Pristine Crescent home in Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast on July 30 after a ‘huge bang’ set the house alight.

Three fire crews were sent to fight the blaze, which caused the roof to collapse.

Simona Udenzi, 35, was found inside and rescued by a firefighter who carried her to the front yard.

As the Italian national was put in an ambulance, neighbours recalled seeing her clothes ‘burnt to a crisp’, the Gold Coast Bulletin reported.

The keen Brazilian dancer suffered life threatening burns to more than 25 per cent of her body and was taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital, where she was placed into an induced coma.

Broadbeach Waters resident Guillermo Dias has created a GoFundMe for his ‘beautiful friend’.

‘She has just been woken up from her induced coma and has a long road to recovery,’ he wrote.

He added that his friend was likely to be in hospital for a ‘few months and will need further medical attention now and in the future’.

As Ms Udenzi’s Australian working holiday visa has now expired, she will need to go back to Italy when she is well enough to travel.

‘Simi is a dear friend of mine and has brought so much joy to my life and all those who have met her whether that be through acting, her Brazilian dance group or through work, she is a bright light and a beautiful soul,’ Mr Dias wrote.

‘She is so generous, loving, caring and thoughtful.

‘Any donations would be greatly appreciate to help Simona through her recovery and for her future back home in Italy.’

The smoke was so thick when fire crews arrived that they couldn’t see two metres in front of them.

‘We found the back half of the house was completely engulfed in fire and the roof had collapsed,’ firefighter Matt Roser told the ABC.

‘Thanks to the swift action of fire crews, they saved that person’s life and they have been taken to hospital,’

Fire investigators are working with police to determine the cause of the blaze.
