Vehicle rams security gate at White House

  • The president was inside with Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull at the time
  • The female driver was apprehended immediately by the Secret Service
  • She crashed her vehicle into a security barrier at 17th and E Streets 
  • The woman did not successfully breach the perimeter and was immediately arrested

A woman has been taken into custody after reportedly ramming a vehicle into a security barrier outside the White House.

The Secret Service announced the incident on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. She did not gain access to the White House nor did she break the barrier. 

It is not clear if the incident was intentional or if the woman crashed into it by mistake. 

The White House was in lockdown immediately afterwards. 

The president was inside with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at the time. 

No law enforcement personnel were injured and no shots were fired but the woman’s condition is unknown.  

The White House was put in lockdown on Friday afternoon after a woman ‘rammed’ a vehicle into one of the security barriers
