  • The restrictions may return as Victoria battles to deal with new variants

Victorians are bracing for the impending return of a mask mandate and working-from-home orders after the state’s new health minister refused to rule out the measures to contain the spread of Covid-19.

New Victoria Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas, who was sworn in almost two weeks ago following the resignation of Martin Foley, said the return of the restrictions was possible as the state battles new Omicron variants.

It comes as Premier Dan Andrews announced on Tuesday the extension of the pandemic declaration for another three months until October 12.

Mr Andrews stated there continued to be a ‘serious risk to public health’ across the state from COVID-19.

Ms Thomas told Melbourne’s Radio 3AW on Thursday, ‘the pandemic declaration allows me to make that decision and I haven’t yet made it’.

‘The public health team are looking at modelling and they’re consulting with their colleagues and various ideas are floated but no ideas have been taken,’ she added.
