West Ham boss David Moyes hits back at critics, insisting he has transformed a ‘divided club’

Under-fire West Ham boss David Moyes has claimed he has transformed a ‘divided club’ and claims new signing Danny Ings can help fire the Hammers to safety.

Moyes reportedly faces the axe should West Ham suffer defeat in their crunch relegation clash with Everton on Saturday.

The Hammers currently who are 18th in the league having won just four games all season, while the 19th-placed Toffees have only won three.

Moyes has defended his record at West Ham and claimed the club remain united, drawing a comparison to the situation he inherited in 2020 when fans had staged protests against the club’s board. 

‘I remember when I came here, I was here only three or four games, we had supporters run on the pitch, it was a terrible team. 

‘That needs supporters, players, directors to be one. I don’t see a divided club at West Ham.’

Moyes led West Ham to safety in 2020 before qualifying the club for the Europa League the following season, overseeing a run to the semi-finals of the tournament.

The Hammers also remain in the Europa Conference League this season, with Moyes suggesting he overseen a raising on the club’s expectations since the start of his second spell as manager. 

‘Any manager’s job is to raise expectations and get the team going in the right direction,’ Moyes said. ‘We’ve had two seasons where we’ve finished sixth and seventh and in Europe. 

‘I think the last few years have been pretty good for West Ham.

‘We get 60,000 at the stadium. Not many clubs in the world can get 60,000.

‘I genuinely think over the last few years, we’ve had a great time here and I have to say thanks here for the support of the board.’

West Ham’s hopes of pulling clear of the relegation zone have been boosted by the arrival of Ings from Aston Villa, with the forward completing a £12m move.

Moyes has claimed Ings is  ‘as good as it gets’, with suggesting the 30-year-old’s experience in the Premier League can help the Hammers in the coming months.

‘He is what we need, we need someone who knows the league,’ Moyes said.

‘We’ve had a look at a few players to strengthen, but I wanted to bring someone in who wasn’t a risk in terms of knowing the league.

‘Danny is a good as it gets.

‘The paperwork was done in time and we need to wait for the confirmation on registration.’

Ings is expected to be available for the relegation six-pointer against Everton on Saturday at the London Stadium, with the club having submitted paperwork to the Premier League before Friday’s midday deadline. 

Should Ings be available against Everton, the 30-year-old will look to continue his impressive record against the Toffees.

Ings has scored seven goals in 15 matches against Everton during his career, representing his best tally against an opposing club.

Moyes said Ings will add to the club’s forward options, with the West Ham manager confirming that Scamacca will be out ‘for a bit of time’ after sustaining a knee injury.
