Fans were sent into a frenzy after they spotted Harry seemingly spitting at Chris as he took a seat next to him at the Venice Film Festival.

Harry, who features in the acclaimed film Don’t Worry Darling, caused a stir after he allegedly approached his chair and appeared to gob in the actor’s lap in front of his girlfriend, Olivia Wilde.

During the bizarre interaction, Chris – who is clapping as Harry takes his assigned seat next to him – seems to stop in his tracks, look down at his leg, and stick out his tongue in disbelief.

The laughing actor, 42, then shoots an amusing look back at the pop star – who is too busy adjusting his jacket and smiling around the room to notice Pine’s cheeky reaction.

A source close to Chris Pine told MailOnline: ‘Harry Styles did not spit at all. People are seeing some odd illusion of sorts online that is clearly deceiving.’

Chris’ representative told People: ‘Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine.

‘There is nothing but respect between these two men and any suggestion otherwise is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist.

The supposed ‘spitgate’ was just one of many controversies surrounding the film, which started with a report this summer from the New York Post that Florence Pugh and Wilde clashed on the set.

‘I can tell you for a fact that Flo seeing Olivia and Harry all over each other on set did not go down well as Olivia was still with Jason when she first hooked up with Harry,’ an insider said in late July.

While neither Wilde nor Pugh have directly responded to those reports, Pugh’s lack of promotion for the film continued to fuel those rumours.

Director Olivia Wilde set the record straight about her ex boyfriend Harry supposedly spitting on Chris Pine.

She was discussing the ‘weird rumors’ that were swirling around the production on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, when she mentioned, ‘spitgate,’ joking, ‘which you might have heard of.’

Colbert referred to his notes, which included the question, ‘Did Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine? Why or why not? Support your answer.’

A laughing Wilde said, ‘He did not, but I think it’s a perfect example of people will look for drama anywhere they can.’

She definitively added, ‘Harry did not spit on Chris, in fact,’ while Colbert joked, ‘Only time will tell.’

‘No, he really didn’t!’ Wilde said with a laugh.
