What to see and do in Playa del Carmen?

Go to the beach!

In Playa del Carmen, all beaches are public and accessible. If you can access the beach anywhere, you can enjoy it. There are as many flavors and stretches of beach in Playa del Carmen as there are types of people who visit.

The people tend to congregate outside the Mamitas and Kool beach clubs. No need to pay for a beach chair.

Just grab your towel and lay on the beach, and you’ll be there for free. Walking north of Mamitas, the beach is just as beautiful, but the crowds are thin, and you’ll see more locals.

Quinta Avenida

La Quinta Avenida, sometimes also called 5th Avenue, is the place to see and be seen in Playa.

It has the look of a tourist resort during the day, changing to a reasonably thriving night scene as the day wears on. Next to the pier, the southern end is a gauntlet of touristy trinkets and stores that turns into a quieter buzz of restaurants and trinket stores as one heads north.

Sports lover?

Visit the Sports Center (Unidad Deportiva) at 10th Avenue and 34th Street. It has tennis courts, basketball courts, and a running track. The tennis court costs about $3 an hour, but everything else is free.

Visit The Malls

It won’t cost you a penny to stroll through two of Playa’s largest malls, Maya Centro (on Highway 50th Avenue and near South 28th Street) and Plaza Las Americas (located at 115th Avenue North and 75th Street North).

The malls are air-conditioned, indoor, and modern, and the food courts abound with inexpensive food options. If you have kids and 15 pesos (approximately $1.25 USD) to spend, there is a miniature train ride at both malls.
