A woman has spoken out about the devastating moment she discovered her husband of 20 years cheated – and why she decided to not end their marriage.
Cassandra*, 50, who recently shared her story with Stuff, revealed the pair originally met when Colin*, 56, was her boss and she was his secretary.
At the time, Colin was already married, and because she didn’t want to have an affair Cassandra gave him an ultimatum.
‘I said, “Look, I’m not going to have an affair with you… you need to decide what you’re going to do,’ she said.

Within a week Colin had made a decision to leave his wife, and the pair have been together ever since.
Cassandra said she and Colin have always got along well; they shared the same sense of humour and tend to agree on most things.
However, four years ago the couple hit a serious bump in the road after Cassandra was struck with a persistent feeling something was amiss and that she needed to check her husband’s email.
Her hunch revealed to be right and she discovered a series of messages between her husband and his administrative assistant that showed an affair that had been going on for months.
She said her first feeling on discovering the emails was one of pure shock. She said it was something ‘that hit me for six’ because she wasn’t expecting it.
Despite this, Cassandra made a decision to print the messages and confront Colin with the evidence.
Although it was clear he’d been cheating, she says he strenuously denied the affair and even had the temerity to get angry at her for snooping through his files.
She said the betrayal left her feeling ‘absolutely gutted’; her self-esteem was shattered and she kept asking herself why she wasn’t good enough to keep Colin from straying.
Although heartbroken by what he’d done, Cassandra also realised she still loved her husband and ‘couldn’t imagine a life without him’.
‘I didn’t want the relationship to end, but I had to build up that trust again,’ she said.

Over the past two years, the couple has slowly been patching up their marriage, however, Cassandra said she still doesn’t have an answer as to why he strayed.
Although the pair have discussed what happened many times, Colin has never been able to give her a reason or an explanation for his behaviour.
She said not knowing why has caused her to worry he might be unfaithful again but she said her husband has assured her he is trustworthy and has said he will do anything in order to get their relationship back on track.
Today, Cassandra said Colin accepts responsibility for his actions and the duo have found a way to strengthen their bond.
‘You get to that point of going, “Oh my god, look what I almost lost” and you realise this is worth fighting for.’
