A woman in Moscow has ended up with 130 cats in her small apartment after she rescued a pregnant stray four years ago.

Her neighbours began to complain of a horrific smell coming from the apartment and an animal charity is now looking to find new homes for the ‘half-starved’ cats.

Animal carer, Anastasia Soloviyeva, said they have already resettled roughly 50 cats after advertising them on social media.

But there are 80 still living in the one-bedroom apartment.

The unnamed divorcee’s cat collecting habit was uncovered after neighbours raised the alarm when they became concerned at the smell and noise coming from the flat.

She reportedly spent almost all of her money on food for the cats but still wasn’t able to feed them enough.

Another volunteer, Irina Medvedeva, said: ‘We found about 130 half-starved, but very affectionate, cats.

‘The animals were in a terrible condition. Despite the face that they had a corridor, a kitchen and a bedroom, there were still too many of them to exist comfortably.

‘We managed to distribute some of them, but about 80 more remain inside.’

A charity called Zoo Defenders is seeking to raise money to rehouse the rest of the cats.
