A Wisconsin woman was left startled after she opened the hood on her SUV to investigate an engine problem only to discover her serpentine belt had been replaced by a real-life serpent.

Responding officers learned from the driver that she pulled over on the side of the road because she noticed that her SUV was ‘running strangely’.

When she popped the hood, the woman was stunned to find a massive snake, later identified as a ball python, coiled in the engine compartment.

‘The serpentine belt was thrown off which explains the vehicle not running properly,’ police said in a Facebook post.

A pair of officers grasped the slithery stowaway and attempted to extract it from the vehicle, but they quickly discovered that pythons are ‘incredibly strong!’

The Winnebago County Dispatch then reached out to herpetologist Steve ‘The Snake Man’ Keller, who runs ‘Steve Keller’s Traveling Snake Show,’ and requested his assistance.

‘The reluctant reptile is alive and well, just tired and scared,’ police later reported.

The snake-free SUV was eventually taken away from the scene by a tow truck.
