Woolworths customer finds apples packaged in plastic, days after supermarket banned plastic bags

A Woolworths customer has vented their fury after finding apples packaged in clear plastic containers.

The photo was posted online on Tuesday, just six days after the supermarket giant banned single-use plastic bags and vowed to reduce its use of plastic in stores.

Alongside the photo of plastic-wrapped apples, the customer quipped: ‘Well done Woolworths for getting rid of those plastic bags’.

The tongue-in-cheek message prompted a slew of responses from users on the image-sharing site.

‘Holy f*** they can’t stop! What it was? Bananas, oranges and now apples?!,’ one person said.

While some criticised the supermarket for its use of plastic, others applauded them for making a step in the right direction by banning single-use plastic bags for customers.

‘Honestly, if you were only going to criticise them when they had plastic bags, and then failed to praise their efforts when they got rid of the plastic bags, I doubt they’re going to bother with anymore greener future campaigns,’ they said.

Another agreed, saying: ‘It does feel a bit like ‘if they’re not going to do everything then don’t bother doing anything!’

A Woolworths spokesman told Daily Mail Australia the packaging around the apples was ‘PET plastic’ which meant ‘it can be recycled via household curbside recycling bins’.

He said the company was ‘committed to playing our part in reducing plastic usage’.

‘While  our move to phase out single-use shopping bags nationwide is a big step forward, we know there is much more work to be done to reduce plastic right across our business,’ he said.

‘We’re committed to removing unnecessary packaging in produce and will be trialing the removal of plastic packaging on a further 80 lines over the next year.’
