  • Members of exclusive Woolworth’s group ‘The Bunch’ scored free groceries
  • Mum Iesha Pugh got free $45 ham and also bagged products like tea and lollies
  • The group has more than 35,000 members and customers must be invited
  • Members are chosen based on factors like shopping behaviour and store spend

Ecstatic Woolworths shoppers have shared stories about how they’ve managed to save big on their groceries by becoming part of an exclusive, invite-only group.

Western Australian mum Iesha Pugh hit the jackpot in the lead-up to Christmas after she scored a free $45 leg of ham from Woolworths, Yahoo 7 reported.

The ham is just the latest free ‘sample’ she has received on top of products like pancake mix, cheese and lollies – all courtesy of her membership in the group.

In a Facebook post, Ms Pugh revealed this wasn’t just a random gesture of goodwill during the festive season.

She said she had been given the free ham as a perk for joining Woolworths’ exclusive group, The Bunch.

The supermarket giant confirmed its group already comprises more than 35,000 members.

Known as ‘Bunchees’, members receive an email notifying them when new samples are available.

They can claim their samples online and pick them up from the store during their next visit.

After they’ve bought the product the lucky customers are invited to provide feedback.

‘The more you review and engage with the community, the more products you will get to review,’ Woolworths portfolio manager Gemma Howells said during the launch of the group.

‘Some of our top reviewers so far during the trial phase have saved over $100 on their grocery bill.’

Mum-of-seven Sarah Jenner has been making the most of her membership and has already bagged items like deli chicken, nuts, fruit and yoghurt for free.

While everyone loves a good deal, not just anybody can join The Bunch.

Customers can only be invited to the group.

Selection is based on factors like a customer’s shopping behaviour, life stage, location and spend in store.

Savings aside, members of the exclusive group can also share recipes, articles and comments about their food interests.

When the group was launched more than a year ago it was initially set up to allow customers to try full-sized portions of samples in their homes instead of taste-testing smaller portions in store.

Members are invited to share their reviews of the samples on the group’s webpage.
