Zara Phillips competes in Barbury Horse trials as five-year-old Mia eats ice cream

Zara Tindall enjoyed a fun day out with daughter Mia today as she gave her a piggy back ride and watched her play on a trampoline, after she competed at the horse trials in Barbury.

Zara, 38, smiled and laughed with her daughter as they enjoyed the sun in Wiltshire with her father Captain Mark Phillips, a gold-medal-winning horseman and a friend.

Mia, 5, laughed and pulled faces as she bounced on the trampoline, while she was attached to ropes and her mother watched on.

Later on the youngster was also spotted hitching a ride on her mother’s back and enjoying ice cream.

The royal was there to compete in the trials where she was rode her horses Watkins and Gladstone as her daughter Mia was looked after by her grandfather.

Dressed in her horse attire, Zara later changed and was dressed casually after the trials, wearing a t-shirt and shorts, as well as a cap, with her hair tied back.

Mia was dressed in a white spotty tip with a blue denim skirt, with half her hair tied back off her face. She also had a stripy top later when the temperature changed.

Mark Phillips looked casual in a pair of jeans  and a cap as he chatted to the youngster, who was clutching her soft toy. While they were later also joined by a friend of Zara’s.

Mia was then seen looking markedly more active, doing somersaults on the bungee trampoline.

Zara’s public appearance comes just a month or so after the christening of her second daughter, Lena Elizabeth Tindall.

The eldest granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II – an equestrian and Olympic silver-medal winner – is married to ex-rugby player Mike Tindall who didn’t appear to be present.

The trials are located in the heart of Wiltshire, set on the Marlborough Downs where the world’s best riders and horses compete in the sport of eventing.

Zara’s appearance comes amid speculation she could be one of the godparents of Meghan and Harry’s newborn son, Archie.

Many names have been thrown into the ring, including Meghan’s best friend Jessica Mulroney, but Zara is believed to be in the running because she was also raised without a royal title.

Writing in Vanity Fair, royal author Kate Nicholl said: ‘Navigating a ‘normal’ life for the seventh in line to the throne will inevitably throw up challenges.

‘Most important, having grown up in the spotlight, Harry is said to want an ‘ordinary’ life for his son.

‘My mother took a huge part in showing me an ordinary life,’ Harry once said.

‘I am determined to have a relatively ordinary life, and if I am lucky enough to have children, they can have one too.’
