Byron Bay hipster Mitch Gobel drink again despite sobriety

He previously spoke out about his path to sobriety after a secret three-year battle with alcohol and drug addiction.

But Byron Bay hipster Mitch Gobel has admitted he’s no longer staying sober.

Taking to Instagram, the 27-year-old artist said he ‘got what I needed’ from sobriety so now he’s choosing to drink again – but this time responsibly.

‘Sobriety was a beautiful experience. Above all, it taught me how to connect with people naturally again… and reintroduced me to my true-self again,’ he wrote.

‘I want to really emphasise that what I’m about to say is what resonated for me personally – For me, being completely sober was just as isolating as being an addict.

‘I received what I needed from sobriety and now I choose to have a drink, or take psychedelics with them occasionally.’

Earlier this year, the Instagram star said his addictions had spiralled out of control where he was left struggling through a dark moment in his life.

‘Before I became sober I was in a dark place,’ he said.

‘I consciously made an effort not to put myself in any sort of social situation without having a drink or drug, to an extent I wouldn’t even go into a shopping centre sober.’

And so Mr Gobel – who boasts more than 220,000 Instagram followers – decided to turn his home into a rehab, and he vowed to beat his habits.

But despite his efforts to stay sober, Mr Gobel said he decided to drink again.

‘Once you’ve experienced an altered state, it’s hard to come back from that. Meditation helped me to tap into a similar realm again without drugs or alcohol,’ he said.

‘Now I generally meditate three times a day, but I choose not to limit myself to that experience alone.

‘Strength for me is having a choice, not being controlled by any substance and true – I achieved that power through sobriety.

‘My journey has led me deep into spirituality and this is something I still know little about, but what I’ve taken from this education is that only I should say what works for me.’

However, many were far from impressed with his social media post, with some suggesting his views could trigger people to relapse.

‘His statement encourages people to consider relapse and why that is dangerous,’ one wrote.

Another said: ‘At least he had the guts to put it out there. I’m not going to wish relapse on anyone but in my experience it’s inevitable if you ignore the fact that you can’t deal with life’s curve balls without a substance.’

One said: ‘I respect the way you always make yourself vulnerable to your community. But I also remember how heartbreaking your post was the day you decided to chase sobriety, no matter the pain or the people you would lose.

And another posted: ‘I don’t think it’s courageous of him to announce that he has chosen psychedelics and alcohol over sobriety when he is a diagnosed addict. He has put himself on a public podium, he has created a business out of his social media presence, he understands his influence and he disregarded it to make his relapse sound poetic and bohemian.’
