Queen has won £6.7m in prize money from horse racing

She races for love not money.

But the Queen has still managed to amass a staggering £6,704,941 in winnings from her horses over the last 30 years alone.

New research shows that her most successful year in the business of flat racing was last year, when her horses earned her a whopping £557,650.

And despite never having won the world-famous Epsom Derby, in spite of ten attempts at the trophy, she is still the 11th most successful owner in flat racing, recording 451 wins – a 15.9 per cent success rate.

The new data, amassed by website myracing.com [must keep in] has been cross-referenced against information from the British Horse Racing Authority for accuracy, but only dates back to 1988 when records became readily available.

The Queen, of course, has been a prolific figure in the sport since the 1950s, when, it could be argued, she enjoyed her heyday.

Still, in the last 30 years she has averaged just over 15 race wins per year – 451 races in all from 2,815 runs – with her winnings averaging out at £223,498 per year.

So far this year she has won 20 races and earned £394,565, making her eleventh in the flat Owner’s Championship in terms of races won.

The British Horseracing Authority table is currently headed by Godolphin Racing, with 132 race wins and £5,513,737 in prize money.

Her Majesty’s most successful horse based on winning percentage is Elector, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, who has a 100% race win record.

The Bay Colt is next due to run at the Epsom Investec Derby next June – as could even help secure that elusive and much-longed for success on the course for the Queen at the age of 92.

Interestingly, however, she will be one of the few there not to have a flutter.

Contrary to popular belief the monarch has, according to her National Hunt Racing Manager Sir Michael Oswald, never placed a wager in her life – not even on one of her own horses.

‘I have never known the Queen ever to have had a bet herself,’ he told the Mail a few years ago.

‘She has a sweepstake, about a pound an entry, in the box before the [Epsom] Derby. But that’s not betting on horses as such. She doesn’t need to either.

‘No, for her the passion is having a horse that wins.

‘Anyway it is a very dangerous road to go down – that’s why the bookmakers have such nice cars!’

Sir Michael says the Queen’s passion for racing is a useful tool to help her ‘switch off’ for an hour or two from the red boxes that follow her 365 days of the year.

‘Her diary is mapped out in outline some 18 months ahead [but] the Derby and the five days of Royal Ascot are always ring-fenced. Otherwise she has to rely on television and televised recordings,’ he said.

‘She understand horses of all sorts – not just race horses. She still rides fell ponies at weekends sometimes, which is not bad at all at her age.

‘There is nothing she doesn’t know about a horse’s pedigree. She has a great affinity for horses and a great understanding of them. She loves horses with a passion.

‘Never forget that every penny spent on racing, absolutely every penny, comes out of her own private pocket. Not a penny of public money is involved, even the stamps on the letters.

‘Horses and dogs she understands. It is a pleasure to work for someone like that.’
