Six things you missed from the Champions League’s return

The return of the Champions League on Tuesday night brought two very contrasting games with Manchester City thrashing Basle and Tottenham overcoming a two-goal deficit at Juventus.

City will return to the Etihad in a fortnight’s time with a commanding four-goal advantage while Spurs can take two away goals to Wembley.

As always, there’s bound to be something you may have missed among all the commotion that comes with a European night. Sportsmail brings you SIX things you missed from the return of European football.

Tottenham’s comeback at Juventus capped off a fine night for Mauricio Pochettino’s side

Electric Juve

If Tuesday’s showdown at the Allianz Stadium wasn’t reason enough to get excited for the return of the Champions League, Juventus put on a pre-game show to end all pre-game shows.

Thunderous music and scorching strobe lights set the scene for those in attendance with the vibrations even strong enough to send shivers down the spine of those watching from home.

The stadium announcer really went the extra mile as he read the team sheets out only announcing the first names of players, the Juve supporters screamed back their surnames. The Spurs players, though, were met by boos.

‘Don’t forget the hot water bottle’

As centre backs condemned to the bench, injury aside, you’re unlikely to get called into the game, so why not make yourself at home?

John Stones and new boy Aymeric Laporte thought as much. After sharing a hot water bottle as they watched their City team-mates cruise to victory in Switzerland, the pair took the next step to comfort and made themselves at home with blankets – Phil Foden and David Silva also got in on the act.

It’s not what Pep Guardiola would have had in mind when he called upon his substitutes ‘to get warm’, but in the crisp cold of Basle, they can hardly be blamed.

No stopping Kane

While Harry Kane’s goal scoring boots appear to be glued to his feet this season, the Spurs forward’s first half goal to pull his team mates back into contention for the tie levelled another record.

As he passed Gianluigi Buffon to leave him stranded, Kane became only the second Englishman to score seven goals in a Champions League season, which was also his ninth goal in as many games in the competition.

Steven Gerrard was the original holder of the record, reaching the same tally in Liverpool’s 2008-09 campaign which saw them reach the quarter-final under Rafael Benitez. The record could be snatched before his very eyes soon enough though, there is still another leg to contest after all.

It’s a nail-biter

With victory – and a hat trick – in the palm of his hands, Gonzalo Higuain could have ended it then and there with his penalty on the brink of half time. Of course, he missed, but one fan could clearly see this coming.

As Higuain lined up for his spot kick, his first two goals earlier in the game left many inside the stadium expecting a goal, but one fan begged to differ.

Juve’s No 81 in the stands, who appeared to be one of the leaders of the chants echoing from the home fans camped behind the goal, couldn’t watch. He turned to face his fellow supporters, biting his nails in nerves. And thus, his biggest fears were realised as Juve’s star man struck the bar.

Spurs in full voice for Mason

The news of Ryan Mason’s retirement from football following the head trauma he suffered while playing for Hull this time last year saw football fans, pundits and players alike pour in tributes.

And with Mason spending much of his unfortunately short career in North London, Spurs fans didn’t forget a former faithful servant.

On the brink of half time, with Spurs trailing 2-1, the supporters sang their tribute from their corner of the Allianz. ‘One Ryan Mason’ echoed across the Turin stadium. And rightly so.

Made you look

It’s probably one of the oldest tricks in the book, but it seems to be rearing its head again as one fan looked to fool an unaware Basle defender Michael Lang

With his back turned, the supporter was unable to catch the attention of Lang, but he did manage to catch the attention of all those watching at home out. Digs all round is the rule isn’t it?
