Thieves who stole veteran’s Australian flag from Vietnam War return the precious memorabilia

Justice is served: Pathetic thieves who stole Vietnam veteran’s bullet-riddled Australian flag return the precious memento after viral Facebook post

  • War veteran had bullet ridden Australian flag stolen from his Brisbane residence
  • A friend took to social media in the hope of seeing the flag eventually returned
  • On December 27 the Vietnam war veteran found the flag returned to his property

A war veteran is ‘over the moon’ after his bullet-ridden Australian flag from the Vietnam War was recently returned.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia on the condition of anonymity, ‘Kevin’ was elated after the stolen flag ‘turned up’ at his address in Hawthorne, just out of Brisbane’s CBD.

‘I didn’t expect to see it (flag) again, but I was heading out one morning with a friend just after Boxing Day (on December 27) and as I walked out the front door, there it was,’ he said.

‘It was a little worse for wear, but that wasn’t a big deal.

‘The flag holds plenty of sentimental value for me, the stars are actually sewn on it.

‘I don’t do any of this (social) media, a friend did it on my behalf.

‘Thankfully it all worked out in the end.’

The war veteran, who served as a platoon commander and with the Special Air Service as an officer in Vietnam between 1965 and 1969, also said a set of keys went missing.

‘A neighbour found them nearby a few days later, but the bludgers (thieves) didn’t return my bottle of Scotch which they pinched,’ he said.

‘I’m just over the moon I got it back to be honest, I’ll be keeping the flag in a safe place from now on.

‘Thank you to everyone who was on the lookout for it as well, the people who flogged it must have had a change of heart.’

When the flag was initially reported stolen in December, the reaction on social media was severe.

One user said it was a ‘dog act’ with another pleading for the thief to ‘do the right thing and return the flag.’
